![]() "E-Recycling Day" at Sid Jacobson JCC a Huge Success! North Shore Community Collected 32,000 lbs of Used Electronics EAST HILLS, NY- April 21, 2008- On April 13 an "E-Recycling Day" held at Sid Jacobson JCC was a remarkable success. The JCC collaborated with eight synagogues from the North Shore of Long Island, and over 32,000 pounds of e-waste were collected with the assistance of The Town of North Hempstead for refurbishing or recycling. Items included computers, monitors, keyboards, televisions, radios, DVD's/VCR's, batteries, fax machines and small kitchen appliances, and filled three 40 yard dumpsters to the top. Electronic recycling exists to prevent the improper disposal of hazardous materials into landfills. The event was a kick-off of a community-wide initiative that Sid Jacobson JCC's Adult Center has convened with eight area synagogues to address issues affecting our world today. The initiative, known as the Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore (TANS) is a collaboration with Congregation Tifereth Israel, Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation, Shelter Rock Jewish Center, Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Judea of Manhasset, Temple Sinai, The Community Synagogue and The Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore. "The community effort of eight synagogues working together was incredible!" said Helene Lurie, Director of the Adult Center at Sid Jacobson. "Every temple was represented by TANS committee members and teenage volunteers, who also participated in an educational component. People pitched in doing everything: unloading cars, directing traffic and sorting items. All of the community members enjoyed working together and making a difference in our environment". The comp4kids charitable organization (www.comp4kids.org) also participated and collected keyboards and mice to refurbish and give to local low-income families. |
